Bob Dylan Tuesday or: How Music Inspires My Writing

Today’s musical inspiration is No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age. This song is in the soundtrack I’ve created for The Indigo Paramour and one of the songs I listen to over and over while I’m editing.

The lyrics have nothing to do with the story as such, it’s more an interpretation I’ve made of the song, of my character’s acceptance of her fate and how she’s going to deal with it. The music inspires me too—the beginning of the song especially, as I see Ivy driving home after a long absence, wanting to be anywhere but in her car, knowing that soon she’ll have to deal with her sisters who she hasn’t seen in such a long time. I imagine this song is playing on the radio and Ivy is tapping her fingers on the steering wheel, desperately wanting to turn her car around, well aware of the fact that her life is falling apart around her and she is powerless to stop it.

Yesterday, while I was reading over the story outline, I discovered that two secondary characters could easily be meshed into one character. It will involve a little bit of rewriting but again will tighten the story. It has given this one character more of a purpose in the story and also given her more depth.

Nice. I really feel like I'm inside Ivy's head, feeling her internal conflicts along with her. Ah, the power of music.

Aaron, she's a demanding character, but I think that's a good thing.

Loving these posts, as usual, Danielle.

And yeah, it's weird when you get that "wait, I don't need all these characters" moment, isn't it? Like, they exist now. How can they not?

Oh, we find a way, but it's certainly strange.

Katey, this "combined character" is turning out to be interesting enough for me to want to check into her background. There might be a separate story in there for her.
